Nier Review

Nier? What's Nier? A game I bought because I'm a sucker for the Square-Enix label!  ...That's the nice way to describe it.

I picked this game up about a month ago, and I think I'm about half-way through it now. Once the action starts, and the cut-scenes play, I can't get enough of it! However, up until that point, it's drier than the Sahara desert in August during a solar flare! ...At least, that's how it was starting out.

You play as a man named father (you can give him any name you want, and the game inserts it into the regular dialogue), and you're trying to find a cure for your daughter, Yonah. Along the way, you pick up some npc companions, though you can assign them semi-specific tasks if you want (such as stand back & attack...) I haven't bothered with that quite yet, because father is strong enough to take everything on by himself. Occasionally, the extra characters will help you, but they usually just rant and make other battle cries.

The first npc you get is purely eye-candy, I'm convinced. Her name is Kaine, and she has got to be wearing the most impractical attire for fighting monsters and other demons.

The other companions you get include a witty book named Weiss, which is invaluable - he gives you the ability to cast spells, which you need for boss battles, one in particular is IMPOSSIBLE without them, and I'm sure there are many more to come, since I'm not done yet.

Yes, I did say he is witty - he talks, and talks, and TALKS!  Some of the comments he has are actually funny, while the other 80 - 90% of the dialogue is griping and moaning!

The last guy you get, Emil, starts out normal, but after some key events, he turns into THIS!  However, despite this appearance, he has even more spells to help you out with, which becomes a big help later on.

All in all, if you're a fan of Square-Enix, and you like the style, I'd recommend it strongly.  However, if you're new to Square-Enix titles, this IS NOT the one to evaluate your opinion of them on.  They've made several other good games - just google them, and you'll see what they've made over the years.

That's all for now!
